The Screwtape Letters is a collection of purely imaginary correspondence. The two sides of the correspondence are uncle and nephew, with one being a high-ranking vice-minister, the “Private Cool Ghost”, and the other being a junior temptation ghost, the “Plague Wood Ghost”. The two ghosts exchange letters about their seductive tricks and viciously expose the ugliness and “scars” of human nature. However, although the two ghosts are sympathetic on the surface, they are also deceitful in secret, eager to “devour” each other in the end.
In the book, C.S. Lewis imagines and depicts the devil’s tone of voice, and digs deep into the nature of human beings through the devil’s mouth, so that people can reflect on themselves after hilarity, see the real motives of their own consciousness, and recognize their own true nature. The Devil’s Letter shows C.S. Lewis’s profound and sophisticated insight into human nature, and his clear vision of the world’s false calls.
