A Preface To Paradise Lost is a landmark work, approximately equal in stature to Milton’s criticism as the Great Preface to Poetry is to poetics. It is only since its publication in 1942 that the English-speaking world has returned to an orthodox interpretation of Paradise Lost, freeing itself from the entanglement of discourses that see Milton as a champion of democracy and Satan as a hero.

The first half of the book traces the origins of Paradise Lost back to its origins, drawing on lectures on the Homer’s Epic and the Aeneid to differentiate between basic and secondary epics, and thus situating Paradise Lost within the tradition of secondary epics laid down by the Aeneid. In the second half of the book, the refutation of universal humanism since the Enlightenment places Paradise Lost in the tradition of St. Augustine.

For the Chinese-speaking world, the significance of this book is at least twofold: 1. to take off the modern glasses and read the ancient books as they are; 2. to set up a stylistic awareness in literary criticism, to pay attention to what genre the author chooses first, and then to what the author says.

The author, C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), was a 20th-century British writer of manifold genius. He ascended the Oxford chair at the age of 26 and in 1954 was appointed Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, a title he held until his retirement.

During his lifetime, he accomplished three very different kinds of endeavors. He has been called “the three C.S. Lewises”: first, the distinguished Oxbridge literary historian and critic, whose works include The Oxford History of English Literature – 16th Century Volume. The second is a popular science fiction writer and children’s author, whose representative works include the “Space” trilogy and the “Chronicles of Narnia” seven-part series. Third, he is a popular Christian theologian and orator, whose representative works include “The Pilgrim’s Regress, Simp”, “The Screwtape Letters” , “Mere Christianity”, “The Four Loves”, etc. He has written more than 30 books in his life. He is the author of more than 30 books, including scholarly works, novels, poems, and children’s stories, and he has a huge following around the world, and his works continue to attract thousands of readers every year.

Deng Junhai, born in 1971 in Gansu, is a doctor of philosophy and a university teacher. He now works at the Chinese Department of Tianjin Normal University. He has published more than 50 essays in publications such as History of Chinese Philosophy, Studies in Literary Theory, Nankai Journal, and Guangming Daily. In the spring of 2012, she and her colleague, Yang Bo, co-founded the “Shi Ya Reading Club”, which reads a classic book every semester. He reads a classic book every semester.
