British writer John Bunyan, who came from a humble background, received very little education and was expelled from school, made a living as a pot tinkerer in his adult life, but eventually became a world-renowned master of literature through his own efforts. This book is based on his life story, showing his journey from pot tinker to great writer, including his hard struggle, his courage, his sorrows and joys, giving readers a glimpse of how a master is made.

A boy was walking nonchalantly along the Bedford to Elstow road. He strolled along the dusty road with both hands in his pockets, whistling. From time to time he stopped to check on the cows in the pasture or to look up at the clouds drifting in the sky.

It was not a good morning for John. Of course it was all Bob’s fault. In class that morning, Bob had whistled loudly several times and each time looked around as if he hadn’t done anything bad. Finally John couldn’t help but burst out laughing, so Principal Crowden thought John was to blame.

I wish he could have gotten back at Bob for getting him into such trouble! That coward should have come out and admitted the mistake: “Principal, I’m the one who whistled, not John!” Of course, Bob didn’t do that. He knew very well that the principal disliked John very much. The principal always blamed John if anyone in the classroom got into mischief. Partly because John was often the culprit. This morning, however, he really hadn’t done anything, yet the principal still chastised him.

”John, this can’t go on!” The principal said, “I can’t stand it anymore. I can’t let you be a student here anymore.”
John could hardly believe what he was hearing. Was the principal really going to kick him out of school? The thought didn’t really bring much worry to John. He even laughed when he thought about no longer needing to go to school. It even made the principal angrier when he saw that John could still laugh.

”You are a disgrace to my school,” said Headmaster Crowden sternly, “You have disgraced me in front of the Honorable Lord Thomas. If he hears that such a disobedient boy is attending school here, he may no longer patronize this school. We cannot allow such a thing to happen, so you must leave and never return!
